Bleak city areas similar to avenue corners, automotive parks and bridge underpasses present the inspiration for British artist Nina Murdoch’s works – with beautiful outcomes.

In her first solo exhibition for 4 years, Accumulating Color, Nina continues her exploration of sunshine, house and structure, depicting shafts of sunshine in darkish corners of town.

Her dramatic and atmospheric summary work can take years to create. She works meticulously, utilizing many layers of egg tempera color on gesso-coated board, then painstakingly scrapes again the floor to unveil earlier colors.

“Murdoch is perfecting annotation of the world as shifting, luminous, finally unreliable,” says artwork critic Andrew Lambirth in his catalogue essay that accompanies the brand new exhibition. “Her artwork encompasses the sudden shining forth of some facet of fact or actuality gathered from commentary, invariably of the most typical occasions or objects, similar to a light-fall within the nook of a grocery store automotive park. Such revelation requires a contemporary painterly language, new and startling.”

Nina Murdoch graduated from the Slade in 1993 and from the Royal Academy Colleges in 1996. She received the primary Threadneedle Award for figurative artists in 2008 and has since had solo exhibitions at The Positive Artwork Society and Blue Gallery earlier than becoming a member of Marlborough Positive Artwork in 2011 together with her first present, Shedding Mild, adopted by Enlightenment in 2014.
